                               WHY WE NEED ADVANCED ART

(This letter was read by Maisy at the school board meeting.)

Hi, my name is Maisy Del Deo and I am a part of the fifth grade advanced art program. I have always loved art, and I was thrilled when I was asked to be in advanced art with Mrs. McHenry. Lots of kids are complaining about next year, when if people don’t take action, the advanced art will have to go. For everyone who isn’t in or has never been in advanced art, your probably thinking, “Well why do we need advanced art when they already have regular art?” Well I have an opinion that I hope you end up agreeing on with me.

Yes, we do have the regular art, but the thing about just having that, is that we only take that class for a quarter of the school year, and it’s such a small part of our school experience. Art is an important part of being human, and it’s everywhere, so why take it away?

For example, architecture can be art. If there was no art in architecture, everyone would live in a box. If there wasn’t anything interesting, our hearts would be the size of a flea! Art feeds us, and makes our hearts and thoughts grow. Having no art in school would be like trying to make a kid a grown-up. Kids look at what is around them as opposed to a grown-up “I’m late for work! Oh no, my kid’s lunch, I still didn’t make it!” “I just got a text from my boss. I need to write and mail all of the work plans within the next hour!” It’s important to stop, calm down, and notice what’s around us.

Art helps us express our feelings and without that, everyone would walk around with a big knot of anger or sadness inside of them. I love to dance, which is also art. Being a good dancer makes me more of an interesting person. In advanced art I like to work with clay, and right now we are making clay dragons. This makes me feel excited, curious, and creative. If everyone did the same thing like rushing around late for work, life wouldn’t be interesting. Art is more than a paint brush and a piece of paper, art is inside of you. Art is around you. Art is US. So we need to keep the art! Please consider keeping the advanced art Program. Thank you
