India Bazaar

By Ben Soares

In December 2017, kids in the 7th grade at York Middle School did an Indian project. In this project, students took the place of a traditional Indian job, ranging from a cricket referee, to a real estate agent, to even a Bollywood director. Kids had a couple weeks to prepare for the big day.

The  first thing that we did was prepare, and by prepare, I mean research. We had a good 2-3 weeks to get concrete information, and another one to put it all together. We spent most of the time preparing by going to websites, books, etc. Also, we also had to cite all of our sources which wasn’t too bad.

After a good 3 weeks of researching, came creating a presentation. To do it, we had a semi-big table, and some rules.

Some of them included: we needed one handout, something to give away, a visual, etc. Once we thought we were done, we had to tour everyone else’s work, to practice and get a good idea on what it was going to be like. Then, we had one more day to polish, and then came the big day.

December 21, 2016, came the Indian Bazaar. The day started off with an hour session of yoga, and then followed by another subject for an hour, art. After two classes rapped up, it was those classes’ turn to do the Indian Bazaar. I remember waiting in Mr. Luttrell’s room, chatting with classmates, until we got in. The first site of walking in was really cool; seeing everyone’s work, how they interpreted the job they took. It was interesting walking around, looking at other people’s projects. I think everyone's projects I saw was really well done. Next, after finishing walking around, it was our turn to set up. I remember feeling anxious to start, until, the people came flooding in. Looking, examining, and watching. I think the feeling of being amazed was mutual for most. I thought it was cool to look at other people’s project, but it was awesome presenting to my peers.

So, now thinking back on this project, in January, 2017, I think the Indian Bazaar was a well thought out, very helpful, very fun way of learning about India, and its jobs, and I would suggest it to anyone would question whether to do it or not, and I think anyone one who does will enjoy this project.
