One of our first group projects was creating a scale sized model of Earth’s layers.  This challenging math/science project involved students first researching the composition, thickness, and state of matter of each layer, and then creating a model to scale.  These models were then used as a reference for the remainder of our Earth Science unit.

Density: Part of our Earth Science unit was looking at how density plays a role in the formation of our planet.  Students in my Vulcan class were challenged to stack liquids, to see what color had the greatest density.

One major topic we covered in our Earth Science Unit is the Theory of Continental Drift, and plate tectonics.  Part of our exploration involved seeing what happens when the plates come in contact with one another, for example a convergent continental plate and oceanic plate.  Using graham crackers (continental crust), frosting (magma), and fruit roll ups (oceanic crust), students got to see first hand how crust is either created or destroyed, and simulate how earthquakes are generated.
