Fifth grade students in Mrs. Sayward's Language Arts class focused on writing personal narratives during Quarter 2. Using the Lucy Caulkin's model, students created stories by developing their characters and plot using dialogue, inner thought and action in their stories. Additionally, students enhanced their descriptive writing by using figurative language, such as onomatopoeia, idioms, personification, similes and metaphors. Lastly, students crafted hooks and endings to engage the reader. The following fifth grade Lion's Team authors are showcased in this edition:

  • Cary Drake: "The Snake", An unforgettable story about coming face to face with a rattlesnake in a California water park.

  • Maisy Del Deo: "I Am Wet", A sensory rich story about a rainy overnight White Pine camp experience.

  • Ashley Pellett: "Forbidden Journey", An action packed story describing a memorable trip to Universal Studio's Harry Potter World.

  • Kirra Griffin: "The Gold Ring", Join Kirra as she discovers rare treasures in a Maine lake on this aquatic adventure.

  • Matthew O'Sullivan: "The Creature in the Woods", Read all about the strange creature in the woods that Matthew and his friends discovered on this scary snow day!

  • Molly Kenealy: "Sinky", Molly is a gifted story teller who details her fishing adventure with her friend Anna at Moosehead Lake. 

  • Stefan MacGovern: "The Best Birthday Ever!", Join Stefan as he tells the story of one of his best birthdays ever! He's even got a mouth watering description of Five Guys Burger in his story!

  • Charlie Newton: "Sail", You've got to read this sailing adventure that tells the tale of two boys as they slammed into rocks sailing towards Boon Island!

  • Sophia Blake: "Flight", Are you afraid of heights? Have you gone to Take Flight and been terrified to climb the course? Read Sophia's account of her day at the adventure park!

We hope you enjoy these wonderful stories! Students are now writing imaginary narratives. Look for the next edition of the newspaper to read these fantastical stories!
